Sports Physicals

Sports Physicals Jacksonville

Sports physicals, also called pre-participation physical examinations, help to determine whether it is safe for you or your child to take part in a particular sport. Although sports are a great way to stay fit and socialize with others, it is important that kids, teens and adults have a thorough examination prior to engaging in a strenuous activity. That's why most doctors highly recommend a sports physical prior to the beginning of each new competitive season. Even if your school or recreational department does not require sports physicals, it is a good idea to have an exam once a year. For those athletes who are recovering from an injury, it is important to get medical clearance before resuming practice or competitive participation.

A pre-participation physical is somewhat limited when compared to an annual exam but it is more specific about athletic issues related to that sport. However, during all sports physicals, the attending physician will review the participant's medical history as well as check the heart, lungs and basic motor skills. If you or your child are currently taking medications or recovering from a past injury, it is important to inform the examining doctor. Although it is unlikely you or your child will be disqualified from participating in a sport, it is important to remember that sports physicals help ensure you'll will be safe. At Family Care Partners, we understand how easy it is to leave a pre-participation physical examination to the last minute, which is why we try to accommodate your needs with same-day or next-day appointments when available.

NOTE: Sports physicals should not replace your annual check-up with your primary care provider or family physician. Plus, it is always important to monitor your health during the season and seek medical attention whenever a change is noticed.
